Greyhound offers accessible bus service

As part of a settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), Greyhound promises to improve its bus service. The agreement settles many complaints filed under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Hotline and Web site offer details

For accessible bus services, call the Greyhound Hotline: 1-800-752-4841 or 1-800-345-3109 (TTY). You should call 48 hours before your travel date. Greyhound may have to call you back to make final arrangements. Check Greyhound’s Web site at www.greyhound.com/services/ada.shtml for details about traveling with a personal attendant, service animal, or an assistive device.

Services are available now

According to a bulletin from the DOJ, between now and October 1, 2001, Greyhound will operate "Access Greyhound." With 48 hours’ notice, Greyhound will guarantee lift-equipped bus service to and from all of its locations. Greyhound must help you with boarding even under "excusable circumstances" like those times when:

• A bus or lift suddenly breaks down;

• There is an unforeseen lack of trained personnel;

• There is an unusually high demand for services; or

• In a particular situation, it would be very costly to provide service.

Regulations call for more lifts

After October 1, 2001, new Department of Transportation regulations say that Greyhound must provide lift-equipped bus service on 48 hours’ notice at every location they serve. After all buses are lift-equipped, you will not need to give 48 hours’ notice.

If you can’t give 48 hours’ notice

Even if you don’t give 48 hour’s notice, Greyhound must make a reasonable effort to provide an accessible bus, assistive devices, or other help with boarding. As a last resort, Greyhound can carry you on board.

You can complain about bad service

File complaints about service with Greyhound or DOJ within 60 days of the incident. If you file a complaint with Greyhound, Greyhound will investigate. You do not give up your legal rights when you file a complaint unless you accept compensation for the incident.

Include all the information you can

Whether you file with Greyhound or DOJ, you should put as much information as possible in your complaint. Include the bus number; the driver’s name; the date, time and location of the incident; and the name of any Greyhound personnel or other witnesses.

Mail your complaint to: Greyhound ADA Corporate Office, PO Box 660362, Dallas, TX 75266-0362 – or – U.S. Department of Justice, Disability Rights Section, Civil Rights Division, PO Box 66738, Washington, DC 20035-6738.
